Dr Wee: Proposed Road Transport Act amendments to be tabled after Cabinet endorsement

PETALING JAYA: The proposed amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987 to address reckless driving and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be tabled at the Parliament sitting on July 13 after being endorsed by Cabinet, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).
The Transport Minister said several outstanding amendments have been finalised by the Attorney General's Chambers this week after the Cabinet's approval in principle of the proposed amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), especially for Sections 41 to 45 on June 24.
"These final amendments or Bill which should be endorsed by the Cabinet soon, will then be tabled in the upcoming Parliament sitting, which begins on July 13.
"Hopefully, we will receive the support of the House to pass tougher laws to protect road users and pedestrians," he said on his Facebook page on Saturday (July 4).
Dr Wee added that the proposed amendments to the Act will also address the irresponsible use of 'basikal lajak' or micromobility vehicles which could cause accidents or even death.
He also said the ministry will continue to advocate on the responsible use of vehicles on the road by educating and creating awareness among road users and passengers.
"The time has also come to get tough on lawbreakers and those who continue to be irresponsible on the road. Hence, the government is serious in bringing these amendments to Act 333 forward," he said.
He also urged the public to play its part in preventing reckless or drink driving.
"This is part of the public advocacy that is crucially needed to deter and combat this social ill which neglects the safety of oneself and others on the roads," he said.
Recently, drivers have caused accidents resulting in fatalities after driving under the influence of alcohol. These incidents have prompted a call for tougher penalties against those who drink and drive. - Star
