DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke has expressed sadness on the resignation of Rahang assemblyperson Mary Josephine Prittam Singh from the party and has urged her to reconsider the decision.
Loke, who is also Seremban MP, called a press conference today to respond to Mary Josephine who this morning announced that she was quitting DAP while being Pakatan Harapan-friendly.
"I feel very sad as she is a veteran member of the DAP. She joined 46 years ago even before I was born, I am only 43 years old," noted Loke.
"She helped me a lot from when I became an elected representative in 2004 until now including a time when she was an assistant for my service centre."
Loke said that even though Mary Josephine said she was not happy with some of the decisions made by party leaders, there was no reason for her to quit.
Mary Josephine had said that she intended to continue as a Negeri Sembilan state assemblyperson and would give her full support to the Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun.
Loke also confirmed Mary Josephine's reason for quitting in that she was upset over the appointment of the state Village Community Management Council chief.
"Mary should understand that every decision taken by the party is either based on consensus or the voice of the majority.
"The matter (the council chief) was discussed at the state level and through a secret ballot, seven of the DAP state committee members agreed with her choice of the candidate while 11 others chose to support the incumbent," said Loke.
He added that elected representatives can propose names but decisions are made by the party.
"Yesterday, she sent a letter to me at the party headquarters, a letter of termination of her DAP life membership," he added.
Asked if he was shocked by the resignation of the veteran member, Loke said, "As a politician, nothing really shocks me. When any matter comes, we have to face it.
"We have been trained for such circumstances and we have to be rational in running a political party. We can't be emotional," he said.
"Of course, I regret that she made that decision. We are elected as representatives not on an individual basis but as party representatives
"So any DAP representative who is elected on the DAP ticket has a duty to serve the people and the party at least until the end of their term," he added.
"I request that she withdraw the resignation from the party," said Loke. - Mkini
