KUALA LUMPUR: The home ministry today said the crime rate had dropped during the movement control order (MCO) period excluding the incidence of online scams.
Deputy Home Minister Ismail Mohamed Said said 2,225 cases were reported from Jan 1 to March 17.
From March 18 to May 3, this dropped to 546 cases.
He said 708 cases were recorded during the conditional MCO from May 4 to June 9 and 488 from June 10 to June 30.
He was responding to Fong Kui Lun (PH-Bukit Bintang) who asked for the crime rate index here before, during and after the MCO.
Fong also asked what action had been taken to curb crime in the city.
To this, Ismail said the ministry would strengthen its force and use drones to nab offenders.
To an additional question by Latiff Abdul Rahman (PAS-Kuala Krai), he said motorcycle theft was the most frequent crime during the MCO period.
Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (PH-Pandan) asked if the government’s efforts and figures included online scams, adding that authorities need to be prepared for this post-Covid-19.
Ismail said this was not included in the crime index but that special focus would be given to such scams.
During the MCO period, thousands had reported losses due to online scams, including a teacher in Pahang who lost close to RM100,000. - FMT
