KUALA LUMPUR: Former education minister Maszlee Malik today questioned the education ministry about discrepancies in data on repairs to dilapidated schools, saying these show Putrajaya’s lack of seriousness in addressing the issue.
The Simpang Renggam MP said Education Minister Radzi Jidin’s written reply to a question from him in the Dewan Rakyat showed inconsistencies when cross-checked with the ministry’s online dashboard.
He said the database stated that the ministry had a total of 781 repair projects across the country, although Radzi’s official answer stated 773.
He also said the minister had noted 150 completed repairs in Sabah against 141 recorded in the database.
“The education ministry needs to explain the differences in data. This is important because it shows negligence and a lack of seriousness at this time about dilapidated schools.
“As stakeholders, we need to monitor projects done by the education ministry, especially on repairing dilapidated schools because we want to ensure good governance,” he said in a press conference at Parliament today.
He said the previous government had placed an emphasis on keeping the database updated and streamlining information as the issue of dilapidated schools was a priority.
“We believed that the quality of our education is related to the quality of our facilities. So we put emphasis on that. That’s why any data must be accurate and reflect what’s happening on the ground.” - FMT
