KOTA KINABALU: A claim that the setting up of federal Village Development and Security Committees (JPKKP) in Sabah is a form of West Malaysian supremacy over Sabah is baseless, state PPBM Youth leader Mohd Isquzawan Arsit said today.
He said a statement made about this by Sabah’s Rural Development Minister Ewon Benedick was in bad taste as there is no West Malaysian supremacy in the JPKKP as the committees will be run and led by locals themselves.
He said those to be appointed as JPKKP members will be selected from the villages concerned.
“Sabah PPBM is shocked and annoyed by Benedick’s claim and it is apparent he is trying to twist the facts,” he said.
Ewon had earlier said the setting up of these village committees was a breach of the state’s autonomy.
Isquzawan also said many existing Village Community Management Council (MPKK) chairmen had not been getting their allowances from Benedick’s ministry.
This came about after the federal government stopped all the funding following the Warisan-led Sabah government’s decision to be in the opposition in the Perikatan Nasional federal government.
Isquzawan said the existing MPKK structure was also filled with political elements so much so that it is now affecting its performance to assist those at the grassroots level.
Isquzawan said the setting up of the JPKKP is not aimed at seizing power as land and Sabahan matters continue to be under the state government. - FMT
