Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said personal letters should not be leaked to the public as this could lead to misunderstandings.
He said this when asked to comment on the issue of Bersatu Youth executive council member Muzzammil Ismail who penned a letter to Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor to request that the latter consider giving him a position in an agency or government-linked company (GLC).
"Private letter shouldn’t be leaked in public as it may get misconstrued without proper context," he said in a text message to Malaysiakini.
However, the senator declined to comment further on the issue.
Ahmad Fayhsal is Muzammil's rival for the Bersatu Youth chief position in the party election which was supposed to coincide with its general assembly in June but was delayed due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
The post was initially supposed to be a three-cornered fight between the pair and former minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman who was dismissed from the party in May.
The Bersatu general assembly is now scheduled for Sept 27.
Recently, on social media, a letter dated June 1 from Muzzammil to Kedah Menteri Besar went viral.
Muzzammil stressed that there was nothing in the letter which implied he breached the law, was involved in corruption or compromised his integrity.
The letter showed it was stamped by the menteri besar's political secretary Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, with a signature and written note which read: "Based on the discussion with YAB MB, YAB MB is ready to consider this application."
Muzzammil offered himself to be appointed as a member of the board of directors in any agency or GLC in Kedah such as Bina Darulaman Berhad, Lembaga Kemajuan Wilayah Kedah, Menteri Besar Kedah Incorporated (MBI Kedah), and Kedah State Development Corporation.
"I believe that the circulation of the letter linked to me is nothing but an attempt by certain quarters to tarnish my image.
Muhammad Sanusi himself admitted that he "did not know" about it.
Armada education bureau head Mohd Ashraf Mustaqim Badrul Munir also addressed the issue.
“Technically, it looks like he's just asking for a job. It doesn't matter, ” he said when contacted by Malaysiakini.
He added that the morals of the person who disclosed the letter should also be questioned.
"If one wants to question Muzzammil's morals, one question is whether the person who revealed the letter is morally correct? Why do you want to do that? That is itself a question," said Mohd Ashraf.
"To me, the letter is not wrong as his own words say it is not illegal and he himself has made it very clear," said Ashraf in a follow-up text message. - Mkini
