GEORGE TOWN: There is no need for talks with Dr Mahathir Mohamad, says Anwar Ibrahim ending any possibility of Pakatan Harapan (PH) working with Pejuang in the general election (GE15).
The PH chairman said he would rather meet the electorate who are facing trying times rather than take part in political chess games.
Anwar said that given the possibility of monsoon floods during the coming election period, time would be best spent listening to the people as he travels around the country prior to the general election (GE15).
“This is not a time to bring private (political) game plans to the table. It is better for us to listen to the problems of the rakyat and see how we can help them,” he told reporters at a Penang PKR fundraising dinner last night.
Anwar’s remarks were in line with a PH announcement ruling out talks with Mahathir.
PH secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution said: “We share the same goal of defeating Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN). But PH will face GE15 as a coalition without Mahathir.”
Saifuddin wished Mahathir good luck should the former PH chairman decide to contest the general election.
Mahathir, who leads the Gerak Tanah Air (GTA) coalition, had recently said he was prepared to meet Anwar for talks on electoral cooperation to face the general election.
He had urged opposition leaders to set aside their egos for common cause against BN and PN just like in 2018 when he led PH to oust BN from power. - FMT
