KUALA LUMPUR: The police have yet to identify if any foreign intelligence agency was behind the abduction of a Palestinian man in the city last month.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Azmi Abu Kassim said a media report yesterday which linked the abduction to Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad has disrupted their investigation.
“The probe on the matter is ongoing. We cannot confirm if there’s a foreign agency involved,” he said when asked if it was true that Mossad was involved.
“So, when such speculation arose, it disrupted our investigation.
“I don’t know how the allegation came to surface and I don’t know where (the media) got it (the information),” he said on the sidelines of an event here today.
New Straits Times yesterday reported that Mossad hired local agents to kidnap a Palestinian suspected to be linked with Hamas.
Last week, 11 individuals, including a woman, were charged with kidnapping the victim.
The 11 were jointly accused of kidnapping the Palestinian man in Jalan Mayang, Kuala Lumpur, on Sept 28, to get him to deactivate a computer software and hack into mobile phones.
Azmi also expressed frustration over how the names of several witnesses had been published online, saying this could further affect investigations.
He said the scope of investigations now was to identify if any foreign agency was involved in the incident.
Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani urged the public against speculating on the case as it could lead to confusion and disrupt the public peace.
He also said the police were waiting for the case to be mentioned at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Dec 15. - FMT
