Fahmi denies Anwar set conditions for Dr M, Muhyiddin to work with Harapan

PKR has no intention of cooperating with Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) and Perikatan Nasional (PN), claimed its communication director Fahmi Fadzil.

His clarification came hours after his boss, party president Anwar Ibrahim reportedly implied that Pakatan Harapan's door was not completely shut to Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin.

"I have examined several reports that indicated the PKR president and Harapan chairperson was ready and open to work with GTA and PN."

"That's not true. The position of PKR and Harapan is very clear, which is that we focus on strengthening the coalition," said the incumbent Lembah Pantai MP.

"Anwar said that cooperation with any party ahead of the next general election must not only focus on ousting Umno-BN, but must be based on principles of the reform agenda, good governance and fighting graft."

"Therefore, PKR has no intention of having discussions on electoral cooperation with GTA and PN," he said in a Facebook posting today.

At a press conference held at the party headquarters in Petaling Jaya today, Anwar did not dismiss the possibility of working together with both Mahathir and Muhyiddin once more.

He indicated the coalition’s door was not completely shut to the two former prime ministers.

However, Anwar stressed that Harapan would only accept those who can commit to its principles.

"We are now committed to the Harapan agenda against corruption, against abuse of power.

"Whoever agrees, they can come and talk to us," Anwar told reporters.

His remarks came in response to a specific question on whether he would ever consider taking Pejuang founder Mahathir and Muhyiddin as allies again, after everything that happened between them.

Anwar has not been on good terms with Mahathir and Muhyiddin following the Sheraton Move political coup in 2020, which caused the collapse of the Harapan federal government.

‘Allies must share same principles’

Earlier in the press conference, Anwar said so far Harapan was only in discussion with Muda and PSM for cooperation in facing the upcoming 15th general election (GE15).

He also stressed the importance of having allies with the same core principles as Harapan, instead of forming a pact just to win an election.

"(The suggestion for all opposition parties) to come together may sound nice. But, there are people who come together to rob others. The movie ‘(Ali Baba) and 40 Thieves’, these people also united (but for the wrong reason).

"We want to unite, but it must be based on clear principles - good governance, anti-corruption, rejecting racist and religious fanaticism.

"These are the core principles. If they agree to all of these, then they are welcomed (to join Harapan)," he said, referring to calls for all opposition parties to form a pact in order to face BN in the polls.

Anwar added that Harapan needs to choose who they cooperate with, instead of simply accepting anyone in the name of fighting Umno. - Mkini
