Perlis assembly passes anti-hopping enactment

Thirteen members of the Perlis state legislative assembly unanimously agreed to an amendment of the state constitution to enable the anti-party hopping enactment to be implemented there.

The motion for the amendment was brought by Azlan Man (BN-Bintong) and was seconded by Asmaiza Ahmad (BN-Chuping).

The amendment of the Perlis state constitution, which includes article 50A on the prohibition of assemblypersons in the state to change parties, was debated by all 13 assemblypersons present.

It was supported by all 13 consisting of eight from BN and five opposition assemblypersons.

Two others - Titi Tinggi (BN) assemblyperson Teh Chai Aan and Sanglang (PAS) assemblyperson Mohd Shukri Ramli were not present.

Azlan (above) who is also the Perlis menteri besar, reiterated that the motion received 100 percent support from all assemblypersons present.

“This means that this bill was approved without opposition,” he said after the assembly meeting in Kangar today.

Azlan said the next step is to enable the Anti-Party Hopping Act to be enforced in the state.

“We will get the consent of the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail, to enable the bill to be adopted and subsequently gazetted so that it can be enforced,” he said.
