Fight erupts at Muda event in Muar, causing injury, damaging cars

Less than a week after a commotion broke out at one of Muda’s events in Muar, another incident happened at an event here tonight.

A fight appeared to have taken place at a Muda dinner event held at Yong Sheng banquet hall after a group of men wearing hoodies, caps and face masks showed up and started throwing bottles and firecrackers into the crowd at a parking lot.

Sabah Muda chairperson Amos Thien was injured during the fight and there were cars damaged as well.

The group of men had shown up and started arguing with Muda members after being asked where they were from, claimed party president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

“I was just holding a dinner event. Why must there be provocation again? It is not like I did anything.

“When Muda members asked, ‘where are you from?’, they started getting violent. Throwing bottles, firecrackers, damaging the cars of guests.

“Thank you to the police for their help,” Syed Saddiq said in a Twitter posting tonight.

He also posted several videos of the incident, which depict two groups of people talking to each other before one group started shouting “Who are you?” and that they reject Muda. Shouts of “balik” (go back) can also be heard although it is unclear which group it was coming from.

A man in a hoodie and face mask then strode forward to push someone, which prompted the group of hooded and masked men to try to push through the other group.

In the chaos of everyone pushing each other, bottles and firecrackers can be seen being thrown across the crowd before a loud bang from the firecrackers went off. The video cuts off right after the bang of the firecracker.

Syed Saddiq said one of the videos showed the bottles and firecrackers were first thrown by the other group.

He said he strongly rejects such provocation and “gangster politics”.

“If you do not like (us) and you want to fight, we fight on the basis of politics and services.

“There is no use doing it like this. It will not settle the rakyat’s problems,” he said.

‘Threw firecrackers into the crowd’

Muda deputy president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz said Thien was injured as he fell during the pushing and a firecracker exploded in front of him.

Meanwhile, Muda central executive committee member Lim Wei Jiet’s car was damaged in the fight.

“I do not care if my car is damaged even if it is still painful. But this is to the point where they threw firecrackers into the crowd.

“There were children and senior citizens in attendance. Imagine if it had exploded in front of them,” he said in a tweet.

Incumbent Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh from DAP, who was present at the event, also tweeted about the incident, urging the police to investigate this matter immediately as it is the second time this has happened at a Muda event.

Johor Muda later said the group of unknown men came back to continue their provocation and that the police managed to detain three of them.

On Oct 16, a “Mega Muar” ceramah hosted by Muda was briefly interrupted by a group of rowdy youngsters.

The group of 20, who showed up at the event on motorcycles, had allegedly instigated a shouting match between them and Muda members and supporters during Syed Saddiq’s speech.

Despite being told to leave the area by the auxiliary police present, the youths lingered at the scene and attempted to induce further noise by revving up their motorcycles. - Mkini
