GE15: Zahid tells Kit Siang to dig into son's case first if he wants to fight graft

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang should dig deeper into graft allegations against his own son first if truly wants to fight corruption.

Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this was because the case which implicated his son, Guan Eng, who was DAP secretary-general at the time, was suddenly dropped a few months after Pakatan Harapan won the 14th General Election (GE14).

"It was dropped in the middle of trial, after the court had ruled there was a prima facie csse against him and many witnesses had been called," said the Umno president and incumbent Bagan Datuk member of parliament in a Facebook post today.

Zahid said this following Kit Siang's call for Pakatan Harapan (PH) to allow Gerak Independent co-founder Tawfik Ismail, who is the son of Malaysia's second deputy prime minister, Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman, to contest in Bagan Datuk under the coalition banner.

Kit Siang had said the PH presidential council should give proper and positive response to Tawfik's request to go up against Zahid, as it would be an excellent way to highlight the coalition's theme in GE15, which is to fight corruption.

He had said this was also to ensure that Umno and BN leaders do not escape from being charged in court for corruption.

Zahid said if that was Kit Siang's reason to fight corruption, it was dishonest of him.

"He knows that I was charged in court when PH ruled the country. The charges against me were made after PH won GE14 and Tan Sri Tommy Thomas was appointed attorney-general.

"If I were to say more in detail and openly, it can cause legal implications. But Alhamdullilah, the Shah Alam court had acquitted and freed me from the charges.

"The special task force's investigation report on Thomas's book had been made public but until today, no PH leaders, including Kit Siang, had commented about it. They have kept mum.

"I can conclude that whoever the BN chairman or Umno president may be, he will be the target of BN's opponents because that has been their strategy for so long, what more for one who defends the party and the truth," said Zahid. - NST
