Harapan turned away attempt to topple Ismail, Mat Sabu reveals

Yet another attempt to overthrow a government administration was in the works prior to the recent dissolution of Parliament, revealed Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.

Without naming names, Mohamad said that an unknown political figure had approached him and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, among others, requesting their support to form a new government.

“If Ismail Sabri and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong did not want to dissolve Parliament, a new prime minister would have been appointed.

“Surely we do not want to follow Britain, whereby a prime minister was replaced in 44 days. Ismail Sabri’s policies had yet to take off, and a new prime minister would have been appointed.

“The person who wanted to become prime minister came to us on several occasions saying ‘Mohamad, please support us this time. I want to be PM’.”

“But we said enough is enough, it’s okay to dissolve (Parliament). We will face the election,” Mohamad (above), popularly known as Mat Sabu, said at Harapan’s mega tour event in Alor Gajah last night.

He joked that despite the floods that are expected to occur during the election period, members of the public would swim to their polling centres, as per the desires of Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Ismail Sabri announced the dissolution of Parliament on Oct 10, after obtaining consent from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

It was speculated that Ismail Sabri had received immense pressure from his party, particularly from Zahid, to hold the general election this year.

This is despite resistance from opposition parties that the general election should be held after the monsoon season that is expected to take place in the coming weeks.

However, both Umno and Ismail Sabri also blamed the 12 cabinet ministers from Perikatan Nasional who sent a letter to the Agong to object to the dissolution of Parliament.

Ismail Sabri argued that his position became untenable after the dozen petitioned the Agong behind his back.

In his speech, Mat Sabu claimed that the 12 “insolent” PN ministers had withdrawn support for Ismail Sabri by sending their letter to the Agong.

“As the chief executive, Ismail Sabri has to send a letter to the Agong. Suddenly 12 cabinet ministers also sent a letter to the Agong. They went against their prime minister.

“These traitors who betrayed us also betrayed the prime minister (Ismail Sabri). That is why we cannot trust these traitors. They betrayed once, they will continue to betray.

“Muhyiddin Yassin and Azmin Ali also betrayed Ismail Sabri. How can two letters be sent to the Agong? That means these 12 cabinet ministers, including three from PAS, held a vote of no confidence against Ismail Sabri,” Mat Sabu added. - Mkini
