Perlis Mufti Mohd Asri Zainal is "stunned" by the speech of a politician who stressed the importance of winning the election to avoid being slapped with criminal charges.
"Stunned after hearing how a politician can openly admit (that his political party/coalition) has to win the general election to avoid corruption charges against them. If that happens, this country will become a haven for corruption," he tweeted earlier today.
The religious leader (above), who frequently comments on the country's political issues, did not mention who he was referring to in the tweet.
However, Mohd Asri’s remark comes following the controversy involving Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's speech at the MIC annual general meeting recently.
In his speech, the video of which has gone viral, Zahid said that it was crucial for Umno/BN to win the 15th general election as its leaders could face criminal charges should Pakatan Harapan come to power.
Zahid later denied that the speech was an admission that Umno’s leadership wanted an immediate election to save the “court cluster” from being charged, as a "spun" by his opponents.
Instead, he was talking about "selection prosecution" that Umno/BN leaders could be subjected to if Harapan came to power, he clarified. - Mkini
