PETALING JAYA: Umno’s alleged decision to refuse cooperation with PAS is good news for Perikatan Nasional (PN) and will allow the coalition to win more seats, says Muhyiddin Yassin.
The PN chairman said the coalition’s relationship with PAS was still strong and in line with the Islamic party’s position as a founding member of PN, alongside Bersatu and other component parties.
“That is their (Umno) decision, but PN’s relationship with PAS remains good as they (PAS) are among the founding parties of the coalition,” he said in a Berita Harian report.
“PAS has also repeatedly clarified that they remain an important partner of PN
“Clearly, their (PAS) relationship with Umno is uncertain, but I think it paves the way for a stronger, more effective PN to win more seats in the elections.
“To me, that’s good news.”
Muhyiddin, who is also the Bersatu president, said this in Kota Kinabalu when asked to comment on Umno’s three conditions for cooperation with PAS in GE15.
On Oct 2, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that apart from PAS having to leave PN, the party should sever political ties with Bersatu, and publicly announce its “100% separation” from PN and Bersatu.
Yesterday, PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin told FMT the party was in a dilemma following “Bersatu’s call to antagonise Umno, while Umno laid terms demanding separation from Bersatu”.
He said the PAS top leadership would meet soon to make a decision based on the terms and conditions set by the two parties.
Previously, Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin said Umno’s relationship with PAS had “failed” as PAS was unable to meet the three conditions set by Zahid.
Khaled said Umno was ready to clash with PAS in 27 critical parliamentary seats in GE15.
The 27 critical seats refer to areas where combining Umno and PAS votes would increase the chances of winning against Pakatan Harapan.- FMT
