Charles appalled Rohingya being sent 'to die'; Pui Yi tells fans keep calm

Refugees

  • Former DAP MP Charles Santiago has criticised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement that junta-led Myanmar agreed to “take back” 5,000 Rohingya refugees from Malaysia.

Pointing out that Myanmar remains mired in armed conflict and that the Rohingya continue to face persecution, Charles said the arrangement should be seen as a “moral failure”, not a “diplomatic achievement”, unless backed by credible guarantees of safety and dignity.

He also warned that any forced return of refugees to persecution would violate the international principle of non-refoulement, which binds all states regardless of whether they are parties to the 1951 Refugee Convention.

“Refugees are not a political inconvenience to be negotiated away - they are human beings who fled unimaginable violence in search of safety.

“Malaysia should be remembered for protecting the vulnerable, not for sending them back to die on the frontlines,” Charles said on X today.

Controversial party

  • Social media influencer Siew Pui Yi’s management said they were not informed of Malaysia Blockchain Week’s involvement in the after-party where she had been engaged to perform by ING Live KL.

Confirming that the entertainer will not perform at tonight’s event, her management conveyed Siew’s apologies and appreciation to fans.

They also urged supporters of the former adult content creator to refrain from arguments, personal attacks, or negativity towards others amid the controversy over her scheduled appearance. - Mkini
