Selangor reviewing need for by-election over rep’s eligibility

Menteri besar Amirudin Shari says he is consulting his legal adviser to verify the allegations before any further action is taken.

Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari said the Election Commission will be notified if a by-election is required.
KUALA PILAH:
The Selangor government is reviewing whether there is a need to hold a by-election following allegations concerning a state assemblyman’s qualification to remain in office, menteri besar Amirudin Shari said.

He said he was consulting his legal adviser to verify the allegations before any further action is taken.

“We have received some information on the matter. I am currently checking with my legal adviser.

“We need to verify those allegations, or any claims relating to the disqualification or loss of eligibility of a state assembly member,” he told reporters after attending the Kuala Pilah Berselawat dan Munajat programme here.

The programme was also attended by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Amirudin said the state government would notify the Election Commission if the review found legal grounds for a by-election.

He also said that the Selangor state legislative assembly speaker may provide an explanation during the sitting scheduled for Aug 3.

Yesterday, a news portal quoted a source as saying that Selangor could face a by-election after an assemblyman was allegedly declared bankrupt. The portal did not disclose the identity of the assemblyman. - FMT
