An MCA leader has accused a pro-DAP Facebook page of maliciously editing a viral video and screenshots of alleged vote-buying in Chuah aimed at framing the party.
Describing it as "extremely disgusting", MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon demanded that DAP clarify its relationship with the Facebook page "全民支持火箭" (All Out Support for Rocket) and questioned why the party allowed the page to fabricate rumours openly and spread fake news.
"Anyone with a bit of common sense and a careful look at the so-called 'evidence' on that page can easily spot that it is a clumsy AI-generated image. Not only are the fingers of the person in the photo distorted and deformed, but even the MyKad on the table is stretched completely out of shape.
"Such a flawed fake image was shamelessly published and widely circulated on a pro-Rocket page in an attempt to mislead voters. The level of brazenness is truly unbelievable," said Chong in a statement.
Chong (above) stressed that MCA would never tolerate dirty tactics aimed at undermining fair elections, adding that MCA’s candidate for Chuah, Pau Jeou Ching, had lodged a police report last night.
He urged the police and the MCMC to initiate an immediate investigation to unmask the culprits and bring the rumourmongers to justice.
"Elections should be a competition of political platforms and service between parties and candidates, not an attempt to cheat votes through fabrications and cyberbullying.
"We call on the voters to remain rational, see through the true colours of these cyber troopers and rumourmongering pages, and use their votes to reject dirty political culture firmly," added Chong.
Evidence submitted
In a social media post, Pau clarified the situation, saying that he had submitted evidence to the police for their investigation.
"I have handed over the video and relevant evidence to the police at the earliest opportunity for investigation, demanding a thorough inquiry to uncover the truth,” he said.
"The video footage clearly captures the people present at the scene. I believe the police can conduct an item-by-item investigation based on the footage to clarify the facts and restore the truth.”
Pau also condemned the acts of framing, deliberate splicing of footage, and using technological means to confuse and mislead the public.
He urged all parties to stop circulating unverified content and leave the matter to the police for investigation in accordance with the law.
Previously, several videos and photos circulated on social media purportedly showing voters queuing to receive cash at a restaurant in Bukit Pelanduk.
One video showed a large crowd surrounding several people seated at a table inside the restaurant, with one individual using a smartphone to photograph another person's MyKad. Another static photo showed an envelope containing at least three RM100 banknotes.
MCA's official media channels subsequently shared the video and photos on Facebook, accompanied by a caption accusing a certain political party of alleged vote-buying.
Although the post did not name the party, the Chuah state seat is a straight fight between PKR and MCA, leading outside observers to widely assume the post was directed at PKR.
PKR incumbent Yew Boon Lye, who will defend the seat this Saturday (Aug 1), has denied the allegations. - Mkini
