The accused had gone to the girl's house in Penampang, Sabah, to collect a debt when they got into an argument.
Sessions court judge Marlina Ibrahim imposed the sentence on Gambu Kumbit after he pleaded guilty to the charge, Daily Express reported.
The court heard that Gambu attempted to murder the girl at a house in Kampung Nosoob, Penampang, at about noon on May 7.
The offence under Section 307 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of 20 years upon conviction.
During mitigation, Gambu, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency, saying he has two children to care for and was working as a plumber.
However, deputy public prosecutor Afiqah Alya urged the court to impose a heavy sentence, citing the brutality and seriousness of the attack.
Afiqah said Gambu did not merely intend to cause injury but acted with the specific intent of taking the victim’s life.
She said attacks involving such weapons carry a high risk of fatality, and warrant a deterrent custodial sentence severe enough to discourage others from committing similar acts of violence.
According to the facts of the case, Gambu went to the girl’s house to collect a debt from her sister. He encountered the victim in an open toilet, where an argument broke out after she scolded him.
Armed with a knife, Gambu entered the toilet, pushed the victim to the floor, stabbed her twice in the neck and told her to “just die there” before fleeing.
The girl was later found by a neighbour, who rushed her to hospital. She suffered a life-threatening neck wound that damaged her windpipe, requiring emergency surgery to create an airway after doctors failed to intubate her due to severe bleeding. - FMT
