PETALING JAYA: The assembly of completely knocked down (CKD) Proton Saga cars in Egypt is set to begin next month after Proton Holdings Bhd launched its car assembly plant in Cairo today.
The Proton Saga assembly plant will increase car exports to Egypt to 16,000 units between this year and 2026, generating revenue of RM570 million, reported Bernama.
A further RM20 million is expected to be generated through the sale of spare parts.
“Proton is not just an automotive (company) in Malaysia.
“It is the pride of the nation, it is a brand that is associated with Malaysia … known to many countries, even in Europe,” said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during the plant’s launch.
Proton chairman Syed Faisal Albar said the regional assembly centre will be the first for the company’s left-hand-drive model abroad, adding that Proton intends to make Egypt its main hub in the north African region in the medium-term.
He said the national carmaker’s vehicle exports were increasing annually and the company would continue to explore new markets to ensure the Proton brand continues to thrive.
“We hope this platform provides the potential for Proton to expand further into neighbouring countries,” he said. - FMT
