PETALING JAYA: A technical study on the implementation of the long-awaited Menumbok-Labuan bridge project, connecting the free trade zone to the Sabah mainland, is expected to begin next year.
Federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the study, which will be led by the special task force for the Labuan-Sabah bridge under the federal territories department, will thoroughly examine various aspects, including the feasibility of the project.
Zaliha said her department had received an initial budget of RM500,000 for the study.
“We will not stop working to advance discussions on this project, but at the same time, we must also look at other efforts that can enhance connectivity in Labuan,” she said at the Federal Territories Youth Conference in Kuala Lumpur today, Bernama reported.
Zaliha said although the implementation of the bridge project will be handled by the works ministry, her department will closely monitor the progress to ensure it proceeds smoothly.
The bridge, expected to be 17.5km long, will make travel easier and foster economic and social growth in the region. The island is now served by ferries.
Zaliha said the recent announcement of additional flights by AirAsia to meet the growing demand was a positive development. - FMT
