'Bribes for YBs': 'RM500k sahaja' audio clip played for MACC officers

EXCLUSIVE | The whistleblower at the centre of an alleged corruption scandal has provided Malaysiakini with a brief audio recording of a politician purportedly discussing the bribe he had received to support a project in his state.

This is the 17-second clip which MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki told Malaysiakini was played during a meeting between the whistleblower’s lawyer and the commission’s officers on Oct 30.

It is learnt that it is an alleged recording of a state assemblyperson’s discussion with a businessperson regarding the terms of returning the “RM500,000” he had received in exchange for supporting a project in the state.

The alleged politician indicated that he would return the sum in stages since the licence for the project was cancelled.

The clip is believed to have been extracted from one of the eight videos that the whistleblower intends to surrender to MACC.

Two voices can be heard in the clip, including the businessperson’s, which was digitally altered to mask his identity.

You bagi saya pun berfasa juga (You gave in instalments as well). (RM) 200, (RM)200 and (RM)150,” one person can be heard stating.

The businessperson is heard correcting the figure, stating: “(RM)200,000, (RM)200,000, (RM)100,000. (RM) 500,000 sahaja (only), (RM) 500,000 sahaja (only).”

The other person added: “Pasal itu duit saya sudah pakai untuk saya punya bahagian meeting hari itu, saya buat besar lah. (Because I have used that money for my division meeting the other day, I organised it in a grand manner).”

The whistleblower declined to name the politician but disclosed that the duration of the video is longer.

The eight videos, which Malaysiakini had sighted, featured a different assemblyperson in each, purportedly discussing the bribe received with regard to the same project.

Whistleblower seeking protection

Last Saturday, Azam revealed the existence of the audio clip of “some people talking about money” when commenting on the whistleblower’s request for protection before filing an MACC report.

Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported that the whistleblower sent a letter to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim appealing for his intervention.

The letter stated that apart from the videos, the whistleblower also has evidence of wrongdoing by the state’s “top leader”.

“Our client has solid evidence, including screen captures of WhatsApp conversations with the YBs (assemblypersons) involved, documents and HD (high definition) video clips in which the YBs admitted to receiving the bribes.

“For your information, our client is prepared to be the complainant in this case, surrender the evidence and become a witness for MACC,” read the letter from the legal firm representing him. - Mkini
