LANGKAWI: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) colleges should not only be the best junior colleges in the country but also offer the best facilities, says Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
The Mara chairman said this during a surprise visit to the Langkawi Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) here on Sunday.
He said he was shocked to find the facilities at the college not up to mark and in dire need of cleaning and maintenance.
In a post on his social media accounts, Asyraf said he decided to visit the Langkawi MRSM without informing the principal or management after receiving complaints from parents about poor conditions at the college.
He added that the complaints included damaged toilets, water supply issues, and dirty food trays that were affecting student welfare.
In an uploaded video, he spoke to three students who told him that they were seeking medical attention after suffering diarrhoea.
When he asked if it was because of the food they ate at the college canteen, one of the students said no. However, he added that there were indeed students who had contracted diarrhoea after consuming food at the college.
During his inspection, Asyraf also came across a toilet door that collapsed after being touched, alongside toilets and sinks that were not in proper working condition.
He also inspected a water storage tank and said that the management had approved special funding to ensure an uninterrupted water supply to the college.
He reminded the principal and college management to closely monitor the quality of the food served to students. - Star
