PETALING JAYA
No decision has been made yet on whether senior citizens aged 65 and above need to undergo a competency or health assessment before renewing their driving licences.

Road transport department (JPJ) director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said while additional measures are being considered, they are still in the policy stage at the transport ministry.

“It’s not that we don’t have plans for it, but for now, the renewal of driving licences for senior citizens remains as usual,” he said after officiating a MyLesen 2024 programme here today, Bernama reported.

“JPJ and the transport ministry are evaluating plans regarding this issue, based on a study conducted by the ministry.”

Aedy was responding to concerns raised by some parties about the need for competency assessments for senior citizens seeking renewal of their licences.

Separately, he said the installation of Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras at Km265.8 of the North-South Expressway near the Menora tunnel had significantly reduced road accidents in the area.

“AES camera enforcement has proven effective, with 99% compliance to speed limits,” he said.

“Since the cameras were installed, there have been no accidents.” - FMT
