PETALING JAYA: PAS Youth is proposing Takiyuddin Hassan as Perikatan Nasional (PN) secretary-general.
The wing’s chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden said Takiyuddin, who is the current PAS secretary-general, is a worthy successor to Hamzah Zainudin, who was recently made the Bersatu deputy president.
“It (naming Takiyuddin to the post) is appropriate considering Takiyuddin’s experience and seniority in PN.
“He was also the deputy secretary-general of PN,” Afnan, who is also the PN Youth chief, said in a Facebook post.
The proposal by PAS comes in the wake of Selangor Bersatu chairman Azmin Ali’s appointment as Bersatu secretary-general.
It also comes days after PAS spiritual adviser Hashim Jasin claimed the Islamic party was better qualified to lead PN, challenging the notion that Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin should remain as the coalition’s prime ministerial candidate.
Hashim cited the party’s larger parliamentary representation and stronger grassroots network nationwide as key reasons for its leadership aspirations.
PAS holds the lion’s share of the opposition seats in the Dewan Rakyat at 43 – 18 more than its coalition ally Bersatu.
Afnan’s proposal is likely to fuel speculation of an internal conflict within the opposition coalition. Pakatan Harapan communications director Fahmi Fadzil had earlier this evening claimed that the alliance was on the brink of collapse. - FMT
