Fire Dept steps in to transport coffin after floods submerge Kuantan road

KUANTAN: The Fire and Rescue department carried out a special humanitarian service to transport a coffin using the department's lorry after the Kuantan–Pekan road near Universiti Islam Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah (Unipsas) here was inundated.

Pahang Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Zulfadli Zakaria said that firefighters from the Peramu Station were deployed about 11am to bring the remains of a 76-year-old woman from Unipsas to Inderapura less than five kilometres away.

"The hearse which was transporting the body could not pass through the road near Unipsas as the stretch was impassable due to floods. The lorry was deployed to transport the remains from Unipsas to Inderapura.

"Upon reaching Inderapura, the coffin was moved into another hearse to bring the remains to Kampung Kuala Pahang in Pekan for burial," he said in a statement today.

He said the woman who died in Indera Mahkota due to illnesses was taken by family members for burial in Pekan when they could no longer continue the journey due to the inundated road near Unipsas.

A 1.2km stretch along Jalan Kuantan-Pekan was under 0.77m of water today caused by overflow from a nearby river following heavy rain, making the road inaccessible to light vehicles. - NST
