Don't reopen old wounds, move on from Perlis crisis - PAS Youth

PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden stressed that his party has chosen to “move on” following the recent political crisis in Perlis, while emphasising the importance of focusing on the people's agenda rather than internal grudges.

He said “weapons” should be turned toward Perikatan Nasional's real enemies, while debates on whether the political crisis in Perlis was an act of betrayal or otherwise were no longer important.

“PAS has moved on, as all party assemblypersons attended the swearing in ceremony of the new menteri besar.

“Furthermore, PAS also supports the new Perlis administration so that government functions and services to the people can continue.

“That is all the proof PAS has moved on, even though the wounds are still there. Do not scratch them with other wounds. ‘Jangan ada lagi gunting dalam lipatan’ (Let there be no more traitors in our midst),” Afnan (above) said on Facebook today.

Yesterday, Muhyiddin Yassin denied allegations that Bersatu had betrayed PAS, leading to the resignation of previous menteri besar Shukri Ramli.

Instead, the Bersatu president said his party only complied with the decision made by the Perlis ruler, who has absolute power and must be respected.

Therefore, he stressed, Bersatu played no role in sabotaging PAS in Perlis, which saw the menteri besar post shift from the party to Bersatu.

Leadership transition

In his post, Afnan said PAS respects the Bersatu supreme council’s decision to accept Muhyiddin’s decision to relinquish his post as PN chairperson.

According to him, the decision facilitates the leadership transition process within the coalition.

“Besides that, Bersatu's stand to remain as a partner in PN is also respected. After all, as a great poet said these past few days, mutual respect is a noble practice,” he said.

The statement from the Alor Setar MP comes after several internal tensions arose between PAS and Bersatu regarding the appointment of the Perlis menteri besar, triggering Muhyiddin’s resignation last month.

The issue also raised speculation about PAS' position in the coalition and possible efforts to revive Muafakat Nasional between PAS and Umno.

With the statement, PAS is seen as trying to maintain its image as a party focused on the stability of the state government and the interests of the people, while dismissing any internal political manoeuvring that could disrupt focus on the party's main agenda. - Mkini
