Three still hospitalised after explosion at Help University

Three victims involved in an explosion at Help University in the capital yesterday are still receiving treatment in the hospital, said Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus.

He said the first victim is a 54-year-old female contractor who is being treated at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital after sustaining injuries from metal fragments embedded in her body as well as burns, but her condition is reported to be stable and under medical observation.

The second victim is a 19-year-old female student who is still unconscious and is receiving intensive care treatment at the same hospital after suffering internal bleeding in the brain and a cracked skull.

“The third victim, a 22-year-old Indonesian man who works as a canteen worker at the university, is being treated at the Sungai Buloh Hospital for observation despite not sustaining serious injuries, while six other victims have been allowed to return home,” Fadil said when contacted today.

He said further investigations into the cause of the incident are still being conducted by the Fire and Rescue Department, and the police will update the public on the latest developments from time to time.

The media reported yesterday that a man was confirmed dead while receiving treatment at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital, while nine others were injured in the air-conditioning gas explosion at a private university at about 11.40am.

The deceased was identified as Soo Yu Juan, 24, a third-year Mechanical Engineering student from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman.

Fadil was reported as saying that the explosion is believed to have occurred at an air-conditioning maintenance area located adjacent to a cafeteria on the fourth floor of the university.
