KULAI: A 38-year-old Chinese national has been arrested after a Jalur Gemilang was found displayed upside down on a flagpole at a factory in Senai Airport City.
Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the suspect was detained after a viral video surfaced on social media at about 4pm on Sunday.
Police have also obtained a three-day remand order until Jan 14, to facilitate investigations.
The suspect is believed to be the factory's operations director.
The video showed the national flag flown inverted at the plastic manufacturing factory in Taman Eko Perniagaan 2.
"Police also seized the Malaysian flag. Initial checks found that the suspect has no prior criminal record and tested negative for drugs," he said in a statement today.
Rahaman said the case is being investigated under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963 (Amendment 2017), Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, and Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1959/1963.
Meanwhile, Senai assemblyman Wong Bor Yang said the Kulai Municipal Council (MPKu) had issued an immediate stop-work notice to the factory under By-law 49(2) of the Kulai Municipal Council Trade, Business and Industrial Licensing By-laws 2019.
Wong also said he was informed that the detained foreign national was believed to be the factory's operations director.
He urged that enforcement action be limited to facilitating investigations rather than serving as premature punishment. - NST
