PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has called for an emergency meeting of the PN Supreme Council to formally confirm Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation as coalition chairman and to appoint a successor.
Hadi said the move is in line with the PN constitution and is necessary to ensure continuity in the coalition’s leadership, noting that more than 10 days have passed since the resignation took effect on Jan 1.
“It is hoped that this matter can be taken into account and appropriate action taken given that the effective date of the resignation has exceeded 10 days,” he said.
“Therefore, for the purpose of the continuity of the PN administration, I, as the PN deputy chairman, am of the view that an emergency meeting of the PN Supreme Council should be called immediately,” Hadi added.
He confirmed receiving Muhyiddin’s resignation letter dated Dec 30, 2025, and expressed appreciation for his leadership since PN’s formation.
The development comes amid internal tensions and calls from PAS leaders for the party to take a leading role in PN. However, Hadi has denied that PAS has submitted any names for the chairman’s post, saying the matter has been left to the party’s central leadership for deliberation.
Nevertheless, Bersatu leader Dr Afif Bahardin said former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin remains the most prominent and targeted figure within PN, arguing that continued attacks from political rivals reflect Muhyiddin’s ongoing influence in the coalition.
Afif said it was unsurprising that Muhyiddin continues to face accusations, adding that such attacks would not persist if he were no longer relevant. He also claimed that internal criticism from within Bersatu has harmed the party.
“What is clear among the leaders in PN (is that) the one who is most revered (by our rivals) is Muhyiddin,” Afif was quoted as saying.
His comments came amid claims that Muhyiddin was seeking a return as prime minister, which Afif dismissed.
Muhyiddin stepped down as PN chairman on Jan 1 following the Perlis political crisis. The coalition has yet to name a successor, prompting PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang to call for an emergency meeting, with PAS leaders reportedly positioning themselves for the post. — Focus Malaysia
