42 Sarawak schools unable to operate due to floods

KUCHING: A total of 42 schools in Sarawak are expected to remain closed due to flooding in several districts, potentially disrupting the first day of the 2026 school session tomorrow.

Checks by the Sarawak Education Department found that access routes to the affected schools have been cut off, school compounds are flooded, and some premises have been converted into temporary evacuation centres (PPS).

State Education director Omar Mahli said inspections carried out yesterday showed that schools under the supervision of 24 district education offices, including Baram, Bau, Betong, Kapit, Kuching, Miri, Sibu, Bintulu and Limbang, have been confirmed operational, although several will need to implement alternative teaching methods.

Among the affected schools is SK Endap in Samarahan, where all school buildings are being used as a PPS.

Several schools in Daro, Selangau and Serian, as well as in Tatau and Sebauh, were also reported to be flooded or cut off due to impassable access roads.

In Daro, eight schools will be unable to operate after floodwaters entered classrooms and school grounds were deemed unsafe for students and teachers.

Similar conditions were reported in Selangau, involving six schools, and in Bintulu, where four schools were affected.

The affected schools have been instructed to implement home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) through online platforms, as well as distribute printed learning modules to students.

Several schools have also been advised to operate temporarily from community halls or nearby schools should flood conditions persist.

Meanwhile, parents and students have been urged to monitor official announcements from their respective schools and district education offices for updates on operational changes.

Assistance and continuous monitoring will be carried out to ensure the school session can proceed without compromising the safety of the school community. - NST
