MyPPP ready to 'offer strength' to BN or contest on its own: Loga

Even with no elected representatives over the past decade and an ongoing recovery from internal turmoil, the People’s Progressive Party (MyPPP) has indicated readiness to contest the next 16th general election.

In an interview with New Straits Times, MyPPP president Loga Bala Mohan said the party is prepared to “offer strength” to BN, or finally forge its own path.

"I offer BN strength. I offer Malaysians a voice," said Loga, a former deputy federal territories minister under former premier Najib Abdul Razak’s BN-led administration from 2013 to 2018.

MyPPP was founded in 1953 and became a BN component party in 1974.

An internal leadership tussle had led to MyPPP’s de-registration and exit from BN, but Loga reportedly said the party under his leadership will not press BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to formally reinstate its membership.

"We will not beg. We have already made our position clear. If there is a decision, we will accept it. If there isn't, we will still move forward," he said.

He also claimed that MyPPP in its current state represents a multiracial party with a clear ethnic base but without what he described as "political baggage".

According to NST, the former senator confirmed that the party has drawn up a contingency plan to contest the next general election independently - targeting eight parliamentary seats and 12 state seats, particularly in Perak, Selangor, Penang, and the Federal Territories.

Loga had last contested the Segambut parliamentary seat in 2018 but lost to its incumbent, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Hannah Yeoh.

"We don't want to hurt any partner. In a coalition, hurting others is hurting yourself," he said, adding that for now, MyPPP will continue to back the unity government.

"From 2018 to 2022, the losses were not just political. There were economic and development losses that ordinary people felt. Stability matters," he said. - Mkini
