Selangor exco in charge of pig farms to have audience with sultan - MB

The Selangor executive councillor in charge of infrastructure and agriculture, who oversees the pig farming issue, has been granted an audience with Selangor's ruler, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, on Monday.

Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said Pandan Indah assemblyperson Izham Hashim will provide updates and details on the state government’s decision to tighten operating conditions for the pig farming industry.

“This includes proactive measures by enforcement agencies so that environmental safety and cleanliness can be strengthened without compromise,” said Amirudin (above) in a statement yesterday.

“This decision was made after taking into account all aspects, including the views of technical agencies, to finalise an issue that has persisted for more than a decade.

“In addition to safeguarding community sensitivities, this initiative is crucial to preserve community health, the environment, and the drainage system, and to prevent odour pollution, so that the industry can operate more safely without causing adverse side effects,” he said.

The menteri besar’s statement follows Sultan Sharafuddin’s decree expressing disagreement with the Selangor government’s decision to allow pig farming operations in Tanjung Sepat, Kuala Langat, as the sultan noted that his residence, Istana Pantai Bahagia, is located there as well.

The ruler, through a statement from the royal office, said residents near pig farms are experiencing a range of negative effects: a lingering foul stench, river water pollution, and a persistent fly problem, all of which have affected their quality of life and contributed to health concerns.

Sultan Sharafuddin also suggested that elected representatives move to live next to the pig farms.

On Thursday, Bernama reported that the Selangor government has decided to centralise pig farming in the state at Bukit Tagar in Hulu Selangor by 2029.

The report quoted Izham, who said that while the project in Bukit Tagar is being completed, existing farmers in Tanjung Sepat may continue their operations before being relocated. - Mkini
