Wan Saiful urges ROS to monitor next PN meeting, doubts Muhyiddin's intent

Wan Saiful Wan Jan expressed his doubt that Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin and the latter's "bootlickers" will follow proper procedures in Perikatan Nasional's upcoming supreme council meeting.

As such, the Tasek Gelugor MP, who was sacked from Bersatu last year, said he had sent an official letter to the Registrar of Societies to monitor events to ensure Bersatu's compliance with the correct processes.

In a statement today, Wan Saiful (above) questioned if Muhyiddin should attend the meeting since the latter resigned as PN chairperson as of Jan 1.

"If he should not attend but does so anyway, then the question that arises is whether the meeting is valid.

"Confirming the resignation of the chairperson should be the first agenda of the upcoming PN supreme council meeting.

“If Muhyiddin still wants to attend, then he needs to leave the meeting when the resignation is confirmed, before moving on to the second item on the agenda," the former Bersatu supreme council member stressed.

Conflict of interest?

He further highlighted a potential conflict of interest with Muhyiddin chairing the meeting, given that the main agenda was determining his successor.

However, Wan Saiful claimed that Muhyiddin’s faction appears eager for him to stay in power, alleging that the former prime minister's supporters have been holding meetings in the past few days.

He also raised the possibility of Muhyiddin changing his mind on his resignation, noting that the latter had done so before.

In November 2023, Muhyiddin said he will not be defending his position as the Bersatu president in the next party election, indicating that it was time for him to hand over power.

Shortly afterwards, the Pagoh MP reversed the decision after taking into consideration a request from his wife, Noorainee Abdul Rahman, that he hold the presidency for at least one more term.

Azmin, Radzi need not attend meeting

Commenting further, Wan Saiful said neither Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali nor party vice-president Radzi Jidin should attend the PN supreme council meeting.

Unlike the PN chairperson's resignation, the duo's resignations from their posts in the coalition do not require the PN supreme council's confirmation to take effect, he added.

"What is better is for the deputy secretary-general (PAS' Takiyuddin Hassan) to issue a notice calling the meeting without inviting Azmin and Radzi," he opined.

Muhyiddin stepped down as PN chairperson on Dec 30 following a crisis in the Perlis state government, which saw relations between PAS and Bersatu become increasingly tense.

The upheaval followed a coup in Perlis, where eight assemblypersons - five from Bersatu and three from PAS - withdrew confidence from PAS’ Shukri Ramli as menteri besar.

The tensions led PAS to threaten to go solo. However, tempers eased when Muhyiddin resigned as PN chief, opening the door for PAS to take over the coalition.

Muhyiddin’s announcement also triggered a series of resignations by Bersatu state chiefs, including Azmin from the PN secretary-general position and Selangor PN chief position, as well as Radzi from the PN information chief post.

However, as the Bersatu president, Muhyiddin is entitled to a seat in PN's supreme council.

Mixed messages from PAS

On Jan 8, PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari revealed that PAS has decided on its candidate to lead PN, but declined to name any names.

However, the next day, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang denied that his party had submitted any names for the PN chairperson candidacy.

Instead, Hadi said that the decision has been fully entrusted to the party’s central leadership for deliberation.

He added that the PAS central committee meeting, which was expected to discuss the candidacy, has been postponed to next week.

The Marang MP also mentioned that PN has not met on the matter, as the coalition has no secretary after all incumbents stepped down. - Mkini
