BERSATU leader Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation from the chairmanship of Perikatan Nasional (PN) is now taking another shape, with rumours of the opposition party leaning towards Pakatan Harapan (PH).
An insider told Free Malaysia Today that “every step taken seems to be drawing Bersatu closer to PH.”
The source suggested that PH “needed an alternative to replace UMNO” and that Muhyiddin was “desperate to have his court case dropped”.
“For all we know, talks between the parties may have already begun,” the source added.
Muhyiddin, who faces seven charges of abuse of power and receiving proceeds from unlawful activities with his trial set for March, has continued efforts to consolidate control within Bersatu.
Last year, the party dismissed several MPs, and this year another MP was expelled, leading to perceptions that the leadership is systematically removing dissenting voices within the party.
However, the same insider also said Muhyiddin may also make a swift return to PN and claim its chairmanship in a bid to prevent a PAS member from taking over.
Reports of discomfort among some Bersatu leaders with PAS vice-president Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar — a non-party president — taking the helm, citing the tradition that coalitions like BN and PH are led by presidents, are now circulating among the opposition factions.
Plans reportedly include motions to remove Bersatu figures Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin and Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee from the Supreme Council to secure a majority for Muhyiddin’s reappointment, risking further PAS friction. — Focus Malaysia
