MCMC temporarily restricts Grok

MCMC has temporarily restricted access to Grok, a generative artificial intelligence tool, for users in Malaysia.

According to MCMC's corporate division, this follows the use of the Grok to generate explicit and non-consensual images of women and children.

The restriction will remain in place until effective safeguards are put in place to protect women and children, it said in a statement today.

MCMC said it had issued notices to xAI - Grok's developer - on Jan 8 and, before that, to X Corp - the company that owns the social media platform X - on Jan 3.

"However, the responses submitted on Jan 7 and 9 by X Corp relied primarily on user-initiated reporting mechanisms and failed to address the inherent risks posed by the design and operation of the AI tool.

"MCMC considers this insufficient to prevent harm or ensure legal compliance," it said.

The MCMC urged the public to report harmful content online to it, and to lodge police reports, if appropriate.

Indonesia first to restrict

This comes after Indonesia became the first country to restrict access to Grok yesterday.

A report from Bernama earlier today quoted the Indonesian Communications and Digital Affairs Ministry as saying that such a move is essential to protect women and children from harm.

"The ministry has also requested Platform X to promptly provide clarification regarding the negative impacts arising from the use of Grok," minister Meutya Hafid said in a statement yesterday.

Indonesian officials have described the generation of these images as not only a serious violation of human rights but also a breach of digital security.

On Friday, AFP reported that European officials condemned Grok for merely restricting the image generation feature to subscribers, calling it an ineffective move that fails to address the issue, which is the use of the tool to generate explicit images of women and children without their consent.

In the United Kingdom, a BBC report cited Technology Secretary Liz Kendall as expressing her support for Ofcom, the UK's regulator for communications services, should it block access to Grok.

In response to the outcry there, xAI founder Elon Musk accused the UK government of suppressing freedom of speech, a report from The Guardian said. - Mkini
