EDITOR’S NOTE: This is an interesting observation from a viral social media post by one “P. Jalil” which highlighted both the humane side of UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh and his alleged hypocrisy in saving the life of three-year-old Nur Asyura Medina.
On one hand, the staunch defender of race and religion is praised for his generosity of having forked out RM120,000 of saving intended for his Haj pilgrimage this year with his wife yet to enable to enable the toddler to undergo a liver transplant surgery at the Renji Hospital in Shanghai.
On another, his crossing path with 49-year-old Dr Yong June Kon – the surgeon who hails from Johor Bahru – is itself a deep reflection of not only Malaysia’s so-called brain drain syndrome but failure of the Merlimau state assemblyman to fight the quota system in Malaysia’s education system.

UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh is busy praising the “hero” in Shanghai for his political interests. However, is he aware of the burden behind the name tag YONG JUNE KONG worn by the specialist doctor?
Datuk Akmal, Dr Yong June Kong is proof of the failure of the system you defend!
The five years you “steal”
Based on official records, Dr Yong (a native of Segamat) entered Universiti Kebagnsaan Malayasia (UKM) in 1997 but was denied a place in the medical faculty due to racial quota
Editor’s Note: Dr Yong completed his study in biomedical science at UKM in 2001 but regulatory limitations prevented him from practicing medicine.
He was forced to go to China in 2001 and study again from Year One for five years at the Tianjin Medical University.
Your racist system is what threw away this talent! If he had remained according to your policies, he would not be a surgeon today.
Malay (language) is not a publicity tool
You are “surprised” that Dr Yong is fluent in Bahasa Malaysia? That is proof of your narrow-minded prejudice against non-Malays all this time.
His eloquence was never appreciated by the system you glorify until he saved the lives of Malaysians in a foreign country.
Shanghai’s pride, shame on Malaysia
Dr Yong was the first foreign doctor to obtain a medical license in China and has served in Shanghai for over 10 years.
His success at Renji Hospital is proof that Malaysian talent can only flourish abroad because of our archaic quota system.
Don’t be facetious! Dr Yong June Kong’s success is the result of his hard work after being ostracised by his country.
If you are truly proud – after your return to Melaka – please urge the Madani government to immediately abolish racial quotas for medical faculties in public universities! – Focus Malaysia
