KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed nationwide standardisation of school uniforms remains under review and will not affect the 2026 school session, the Education Ministy said today.
Education Ministy director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad said no decision has been finalised, stressing that the matter is still at the study stage.
"The Education Ministy would like to clarify that the proposal to standardise school uniforms nationwide is still under study," he said in a statement.
He said any final decision would only be made after a comprehensive evaluation of all relevant aspects, with implementation, if approved, targeted for the 2027 school session.
"The final decision will only be made after a thorough review of all related considerations for possible implementation in the 2027 school session," he said.
Mohd Azam also assured parents and stakeholders that there will be no changes to school uniforms for students during the current school session.
"There is no change to students' school uniforms for this year," he said, adding that parents should not be concerned.
He said the ministry would ensure that all relevant parties are informed well in advance should any decision be reached.
"The Education Ministy assures that any decision on this matter will be communicated early to parents and all stakeholders," he said.
Explaining the rationale behind the proposal, Mohd Azam said the suggested standardisation aims to foster a sense of togetherness and unity among students, while also addressing the financial burden faced by parents in preparing their children for school.
"The proposed standardisation is intended to promote unity and a shared identity among students, while potentially helping to reduce the cost of school preparation borne by parents," he said.
The clarification comes amid public discussion and speculation over possible changes to school uniforms ahead of the new academic year.
The proposal was previously raised following feedback from parents and educators on the rising cost of school preparation, including the need to purchase multiple sets of uniforms and school-specific attire.
The Education Ministy is studying whether a more standardised approach could help ease expenses without affecting school identity or discipline. - NST
