THE cyberspace is abuzz with the proposal by Selangor PAS Youth to appoint Kedah Menteri Besar (MB) Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor as Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) new chairman to replace Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who officially relinquished the post yesterday (Jan 1).
The state wing of the Islamist party has vouched for Sanusi’s administrative track record as Kedah MB and various positive characteristics such vocal in voicing the need of every layer of society/connecting with the grassroots, rallying youths to face future political challenges and ability to stand tall despite attacks by political foes.
“PN truly needs an opposition spokesman who is firm, brave and consistent in rebuking the (ruling) government’s weaknesses for the sake of the rakyat without fear,” Selangor PAS Youth head Mohamed Sukri Omar pointed out in a media statement.
“Our support for DS Sanusi doesn’t mean that the Selangor PAS Youth undermine all services rendered by TS Muhyiddin throughout his time tenure in steering the PN ship. However, we can’t continue to be lulled by nostalgia. PN needs a fresher continuity for the rakyat and the country.”
At one hand, Sanusi’s nomination as the new PN chairman was hailed by his admirers as “the pinnacle of PMX’s downfall with youth support jumping 200%” given he would also make the right Prime Minister (PM) candidate material should PAS/PN emerge victorious in the 16th General Election (GE16).

On another, even if the 51-year-old PAS election director and two-term Jeneri state assemblyman has reportedly received the blessing of PAS ulama council chief and Kedah PAS commissioner Datuk Ahmad Yahaya, opinions are divided on Sanusi’s suitability given his non-cleric background which paints the secularist perception.

However, detractors were quick to point to Sanusi’s obnoxious style of “slandering his political enemies, easily getting envious and speaking rudely” or even PAS’ inability to rule a small state as evident in the Perlis political crisis.

For the non-Muslim fraternity, concerns are seemingly centred on the likelihood of the PN chairman becoming PM should PN wins GE16.
“How will he fair in meetings with global company CEOs of Nvidia, Meta, Intel, Oracle etc. to pitch for investment?” wondered one observer to a Free Malaysia Today (FMT) FB post on the PAS ulama council giving blessing to Sanusi to be PN’s chairman.

Others also mocked the Karaoke-loving Sanusi for his endless territorial dispute with the Penang state government and his long list of ruthless antics, including potentially shutting down gaming outlets or even vernacular/Chinese schools should he become PM11.
