Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz today said that any leadership nominations within Perikatan Nasional must be guided by the coalition’s constitution, with due regard for party hierarchy and inter-party harmony.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, Faisal said that Bersatu accepts, in principle and as a matter of policy, any decision made by the PN supreme council.
“Under the PN constitution, Clause 8.3(b) provides that: In the event that the chairperson resigns, such resignation shall only take effect upon approval by the supreme council, which shall, as soon as possible, elect a new chairperson.
“From my personal perspective, in terms of nominations, the PN constitution must serve as the guiding framework.
“Due consideration should be given to party hierarchy and to the executive authority vested in the presidents of the component parties, as well as to the need to preserve harmony among the component parties,” he said.
Faisal was responding to PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s statement earlier today that his party is poised to assume PN’s leadership.

Hadi said several names, including his own, were being considered to replace the coalition’s former chairperson and Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin.
On Dec 30, Muhyiddin announced his resignation as PN chairperson, effective Jan 1, amid boiling tensions between PAS and Bersatu, after Bersatu leaders in Perlis initiated a coup that led to PAS losing hold over the state government.
Muhyiddin’s announcement triggered a series of resignations by Bersatu state chiefs, including party secretary-general Azmin Ali from the PN secretary-general and Selangor chief positions, as well as Bersatu vice-president Ahmad Faizal Azumu from the Perak PN chief position.
PAS decides to take over
Speaking to reporters after delivering a mid-morning sermon at Masjid Rusila, Terengganu, Hadi, who is also Marang MP, said the matter will be discussed by PAS leaders and at a PN council meeting expected next week.
“We have already decided to take over PN. PAS will take over the leadership of PN. We will discuss this in meetings,” Hadi said.

Pressed further, Hadi admitted he is in poor health and that PAS has a list of other capable leaders for the position, including politicians and technocrats.
It was previously reported that various factions within PAS had mooted names, including party deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, and Kedah Menteri Besar Sanusi Nor, after Muhyiddin’s sudden resignation.
Hadi, however, today said PAS still maintains “good relations” with Bersatu, as well as Umno - the party’s former ally under the Muafakat Nasional pact.
Separately, PN Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden insisted that the coalition remains intact, brushing off recent frictions between PAS and Bersatu as merely “a day or two of noise”.

The rift within PN began when eight Perlis assemblypersons, including three from PAS, declared they had lost confidence in PAS’ Shukri Ramli as menteri besar, who was later replaced by Perlis Bersatu chairperson Abu Bakar Hamzah.
Several PAS leaders later expressed dissatisfaction - either through insinuation or directly - including Afnan himself, who said the Perlis crisis proved that Bersatu was unfit to lead the coalition. - Mkini
