Suspected space debris washes ashore on Pekan beach

PEKAN: A large piece of suspected space debris was found washed ashore at Kampung Tanjung in Nenasi near here on Dec 30.

The object, measuring about 4m by 3m, was discovered on the beach at the settlement, located about 92km from Kuantan.

Pekan police chief, Superintendent Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin said the object was first spotted by a member of the public at about 5pm on Dec 30, who alerted staff from the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry and shared several images.

"A team from the ministry's Space Authority Division, together with officers from the Atomic Energy Malaysia Department (East Coast Region), the Malaysian Space Agency and the police, went to the site at 11.45am yesterday (Dec 31).

"After tests and examinations were carried out, the object was confirmed to be free from radiation. It was also found to be covered with barnacles," he said in a statement today.

Zaidi said the object is believed to have fallen from space into the sea before being washed ashore at Nenasi beach.

"As a safety precaution, the object was moved from the discovery site to the Nenasi police station and will be transported to Kuala Lumpur for further examination.

"Investigations by the relevant authorities are ongoing to identify the object, including its components," he said.

Checks at the Nenasi police station revealed that the partially damaged object, weighing several hundred kg, was transported from the shoreline to the station using a three-tonne lorry. - NST
