Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has described his resignation from the Perikatan Nasional chairperson post as a “strategic move” rather than a sign of weakness.
In a New Year’s message, he also reaffirmed his position as Bersatu president, amid calls, including from within the party, to commence a succession plan.
“I wish to stress that I continue to lead Bersatu as its president.
“Although I no longer lead Perikatan Nasional, Bersatu remains a principled, consistent, and loyal partner within PN, and this cooperation will continue to be preserved for the sake of stability and the strength of the coalition,” said the former prime minister.
“In facing current challenges, our priority is to ensure the continuity, strength, and future of the party.
“At times, we need to take a step back - not as a sign of weakness, but as a strategic move to strengthen our foundations, reorganise the leadership ranks, and build a party that is more structured and sustainable,” said the Pagoh MP.

On Dec 30, Muhyiddin announced his resignation as PN chairperson effective Jan 1, amid boiling tensions between PAS and Bersatu, after Bersatu leaders in Perlis initiated a coup that led to PAS losing hold over the state government.
Muhyiddin’s announcement triggered a series of resignations by Bersatu state chiefs, including Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali from the PN secretary-general position and PN Selangor chief position, as well as Bersatu vice-president Ahmad Faizal Azumu from the Perak PN chief position.
Moving forward, Muhyiddin today said, “I call on all Bersatu members to remain steadfast, disciplined, and committed to a culture of mutual respect, and to resolve any differences prudently, maturely, and internally, in the best interests of the party.”
PN is now set to name Muhyiddin’s replacement, with speculations rife that PAS is set to take over as the coalition leader. - Mkini
