PAPAR: A baby boy was found abandoned in the women's toilet at a petrol station in Bongawan early yesterday morning.
At about 1.20am, police received a report from a 21-year-old local woman regarding the discovery of the baby.
Following the report, a police team was immediately dispatched to the scene, and the baby was taken to Papar Hospital for medical examination and treatment.
District police chief, Superintendent Heryan Mohd Tahir, said investigations revealed that the woman who lodged the report is suspected to be the baby's mother.
"She initially claimed that she found the baby in the petrol station toilet. However, a review of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage at the premises strengthened suspicions that the woman has a direct connection to the baby," he said when contacted today.
He said the baby boy is currently in stable condition and remains under hospital supervision, while the woman has been detained to assist with further investigations.
"The police take this matter seriously, and the welfare and safety of the baby remain our top priority," he said. - NST
