GEORGE TOWN: A forest fire that sent thick white smoke billowing over Gelugor was extinguished in just over two hours, although firefighting operations continued for nearly 15 hours before concluding early today.
The blaze in Taman Bukit Gambir engulfed about 1.2 hectares of forested land, drawing a swift response from the Penang Fire and Rescue Department.
A distress call was received at 1.51pm yesterday, prompting the deployment of a team from the Jalan Perak fire and rescue station.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director John Sagun Francis said firefighters moved quickly to contain the situation.
"The fire was brought under control at 3.53pm and fully extinguished at 4.15pm.
"Despite the fire being extinguished in just over two hours, firefighters remained at the site overnight to conduct overhaul work, ensuring all hotspots were eliminated. The operation was completed at 3.53am today," he said.
John said the entire operation officially concluded at 4.45am today — nearly 15 hours after the initial emergency call.
Firefighting operations were divided into two sectors, with crews using firebeaters and jet shooters to tackle the flames while simultaneously creating firebreaks to prevent the fire from spreading further.
He said a drone unit was also deployed to provide aerial monitoring.
A total of nine personnel and three vehicles were involved, with additional assistance from nearby volunteer firefighting teams.
No casualties or injuries were reported, and authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire. - NST
