Poor enforcement leads to same fireworks issue each year

YOURSAY | ‘It was a mistake to allow the sale of firecrackers.’

MCA Youth urges clear regulations on fireworks sales following Penang fire

SNAPSHOT | Ministry to review SOP after 7th case of fireworks stalls catching fire

Only truth: Ask for a total ban on all fireworks.

The incessant firing of crackers until the wee hours of the morning, some even till 5am, just tells us that many people, mostly youngsters, do not sleep.

Mothers had a tough time keeping their babies quiet, the elderly being disturbed, and animals frightened.

The use of pipe bomb crackers was so rampant.

Where did enforcement go? Several fire incidents as well. The government has become so disappointing.

An ordinary Malaysian: I have never been in favour of fireworks as they are a source of pollution and a sheer waste of money.

If anyone has cash to throw, why not donate to the many NGOs that are supporting those in need? It will certainly make your celebration a lot more meaningful.

In recent years, fireworks have no longer been confined to the Lunar New Year celebrations, as we have to endure the same alarming noises for all other ethnic and religious celebrations as well.

Just recently, a man in Johor lost his leg due to a fireworks mishap. It will be interesting to see the hospital and fire statistics related to fireworks.

There is certainly a major cost involved (Malaysiakini should do an investigative report on the impact of fireworks on the community - it’s what you are good at). I am certainly in favour of a ban, at least in the residential areas.

World Citizen: The authorities should make it a law against playing with fireworks and firecrackers in or near residential areas.

It is a real nuisance, especially to the elderly, the sick and babies. Why is the government allowing this menace and nuisance in residential areas?

The authorities can allocate special areas away from the residential areas for people who want to play with fireworks and firecrackers during festivals. People can play all they want in these areas.

This is a very simple solution to this problem, yet the authorities do not have the common sense to implement this measure. Please let’s behave like a civilised society.

Kawak: Purely a case of “tidak apa” (apathetic) attitude on the part of enforcement; “tidak peduli” (lax) attitude on the part of our society to observe the law, and the firefighting problem-solving of the government.

The law says only certain types of firecrackers are allowed, but dangerous and banned firecrackers can be bought openly.

What are the Customs Department and the police doing?

Matsalleh: Fireworks stored and sold without a licence and sold to minors is a disgrace. More so is the proliferation of fireworks.

During Chinese New Year, it was 15 nights of sleepless hell. Traumatised children, pets and the elderly. No fireworks in Singapore, no fireworks in Beijing, no fireworks in Hong Kong. Time for change.

Anony_160136: Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, you came out with the rule to punish people for littering by fining them and performing community service.

After Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri, my “taman” (neighbourhood) is littered!!

The morons who lit the fireworks are not even from our housing area.

Just because our housing area has large open spaces, they come and light up fireworks, and when done, all the remnants and debris are left behind.

Now, who is going to clean up the mess? Are you or your ministry employees going to help us clean up the place?

GreenTiger6931: Same crap each year! Wait for next year and then repeat a similar article. Will today's government do anything? No, of course not.

Because just like everything else here, even firecrackers can be given a racist twist.

Malaysians are a spoilt lot. Complain about the cost of living, subsidies and so on, but literally burn money by lighting up firecrackers! In a few weeks, this same group would be experts in crude oil prices, the Straits of Hormuz, or even nuclear reactors!

You name it, we have loyar buruk (people who engage in frivolous banter like a bad lawyer). In Malaysia, new experts are born every week, even if they may have failed physics or maths in Form 5.

Apanama is back: This is the quality of youth head we are having now. Instead of a total ban on all types of fireworks and firecrackers, MCA Youth secretary-general Saw Yee Fung is asking for regulations.

What will they say to you? "Tak apa, kita siasat" (It’s okay, we will investigate). Later, "lupakan” (let’s forget it).

GoldenParrot4280: It was a mistake to allow the sale of firecrackers.

The government made a bad decision.  - Mkini
