KL now on ‘alert’ level as scorching weather continues

PETALING JAYA:

 Kuala Lumpur has been placed on a Level 1 (alert) warning, according to the meteorological department (MetMalaysia) in its 4pm update today.

The capital city joins 14 other areas under the same warning.

They include the whole of Perlis; Sik, Pokok Sena, Kubang Pasu, Langkawi, Kuala Muda, Kulim and Bandar Baharu in Kedah; northeast and northern Penang; and Hulu Perak, Selama, Kinta and Kuala Kangsar in Perak.

The Level 1 alert was issued following daily maximum temperatures of 35-37 degrees Celsius for at least three consecutive days.

Meanwhile, Level 2 (heatwave) warnings have now been issued for three areas in Kedah — Pendang, Padang Terap and Baling — after daily temperatures of 37-40 degrees Celsius persisted for three consecutive days, up from just one area earlier this morning.

It was reported earlier that the heat up north was expected to last until about April when the inter-monsoon period sets in. The inter-monsoon period usually lasts from April to about June before transitioning to the south-west monsoon.
