PETALING JAYA:
A teacher pleaded not guilty in the Setiu sessions court today to seven charges of child grooming and sexual assault committed against two male students last month.

Darusalam Ab Rahman, 42, entered his plea after the charges were read to him before judge Ahmad Fadhli Mahmud, Bernama reported.

Under the first three charges, Darusalam was accused of communicating via WhatsApp with a 17-year-old boy with the intent to commit or facilitate sexual assault against the victim.

The offences were alleged to have been committed at a house in Kampung Anak Ikan, on May 5, 8 and 10.

The charges were framed under Section 12(1) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 for child grooming, read together with Section 16(1) of the same Act, which carries a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment and whipping, upon conviction.

Darusalam was charged with two counts of sexual assault against the same teenager inside a car in front of an eatery in Kuala Terengganu at about 9pm, and in front of a house at Kampung Anak Ikan at about 10pm on May 11.

The charges were brought under Section 14(a) of the Act for sexual assault, read together with Section 16(1), which provides for up to 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping, upon conviction.

He was also charged with two counts of sexual assault against a 15-year-old boy in a secondary school toilet in Besut at about 4pm on May 8, framed under Section 14(a) of the Act, read together with Section 16(1).

Judge Ahmad Fadhli allowed bail of RM22,000 for all the charges with one surety, with additional conditions that Darusalam report to the nearest police station once a month and not to contact prosecution witnesses.

The court fixed July 6 for mention and submission of documents at the Besut sessions court.

The prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutor Akmal Jazlee, while Darusalam was represented by a lawyer, who declined to be named. - FMT
