KUALA LUMPUR: Football legend Datuk Jamal Nasir has slammed the FA of Malaysia (FAM) over its handling of the national men's football team.
He said money and resources have been wasted as FAM tries another national team revamp following the departures of Harimau Malaya CEO Rob Friend and head coach Peter Cklamovski.
National Under-23 head coach Nafuzi Zain and several other key technical staff have also left.
The changes came after the Asian Football Confederation reportedly urged FAM to take back direct control of the national team, moving away from the "semi-outsourced model", that was introduced at the end of 2024.
The shakeup of the national set-up came after the "heritage players" storm that rocked FAM during Friend's tenure.
Jamal questioned the logic behind the setting up of the corporate-style management structure, particularly the creation of the CEO role. FAM has just put an end to this.
"What's the point of the CEO? It's just a waste of money," he said.
Jamal said the deeper issue lies in FAM's governance culture, where responsibility blurs when problems arise.
"Over time, there's less and less accountability… it feels like everything is being swept under the carpet," he said.
FAM's corporate-style model was originally intended to modernise national team management and improve efficiency. Instead, it created overlapping lines and friction between its administrative and technical departments.
The latest overhaul has raised familiar questions, including who will map Harimau Malaya's long-term strategies after so many failures? - NST
