PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across nine states and the Federal Territories of Putrajaya and Labuan, effective until 9am on Monday (June 22).
In the northern region, the weather alert covers the entire state of Perlis and Pulau Pinang. Affected areas in Kedah include Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Yan, Pendang, Kuala Muda, Kulim and Bandar Baharu, while Perak will see storms in Kerian, Larut, Matang Dan Selama, Manjung, Perak Tengah, Bagan Datuk and Hilir Perak.
In the central and southern parts of the peninsula, coastal and inland areas are affected, including Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Klang, Petaling, Kuala Langat and Sepang in Selangor, alongside WP Putrajaya.
The warning also extends to Negeri Sembilan (Seremban, Port Dickson, Kuala Pilah, Rembau, Jempol and Tampin), the entire state of Melaka, and several districts in Johor, namely Tangkak, Muar, Batu Pahat and Pontian.
Over in East Malaysia, Sarawak will experience severe weather in Miri (Miri) and Limbang.
For Sabah, the alert covers Pedalaman (Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Keningau and Tambunan), Pantai Barat (Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu and Ranau), Tawau (Tawau), Sandakan (Tongod) and Kudat (Pitas and Kudat), as well as WP Labuan.
MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.
A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
The notice was officially issued by the department at 5.45am on Monday.
