Bersatu leader questions purpose of PN emergency meeting

Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz says it is pointless for the Supreme Council to meet if the decisions it reaches need to be approved by its component parties.

PETALING JAYA:
A Bersatu leader has questioned the purpose of tomorrow’s Perikatan Nasional emergency Supreme Council meeting, which is being held amid membership tensions within the coalition.

Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz claimed that PN chairman and PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar does not have the authority to finalise decisions agreed upon by the Supreme Council because he is not a party president.

He questioned the point of the meeting if its decisions need approval from PN’s component parties.

“Is the meeting meant to reach decisions or merely to formulate proposals? Or is it simply to convey decisions that had already been made outside the Supreme Council?” he said in a Facebook post.

“He (Samsuri) must refer matters to his own party president (Abdul Hadi Awang), who is not a member of the PN Supreme Council, and to the PAS syura council before any decisions can be finalised.

“Where will these proposals be decided afterwards? If they do not meet the expectations of certain parties, what action will be taken next?”

Tun Faisal also criticised PN for not convening its Supreme Council earlier, despite the need to prepare for the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections.

PN secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan sent a notice calling for the emergency meeting on June 22, with membership issues listed as the main agenda.

Among the other matters expected to be discussed are the upcoming state elections and the use of the coalition’s logo.

The meeting comes amid continued uncertainty over the future of the PAS–Bersatu relationship within PN, which has strained for months.

On June 8, PAS decided to sever ties with Bersatu, on grounds that Muhyiddin Yassin’s party had become power-hungry and was no longer prioritising Malay-Muslim unity.

Bersatu has since pledged to go all-out against PAS in the upcoming Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections, while insisting it will contest under the PN banner. - FMT
